Protecting Lake Ilmajärvi - Together
Lake Ilmajärvi, located in Ruokolahti in South Karelia, Finland, is a small but valuable lake with a long history of local life and rich nature.
Today, its fragile ecosystem is under threat.
We are a local water protection association working to restore and protect the lake — together with residents, landowners, and partners.
Our Story
Lake Ilmajärvi was once known for its clear (kirkas) water. Over the past decades, however, its condition has deteriorated — mainly due to forest drainage in the surrounding catchment area.
Today, the water is darker, visibility has decreased, and signs of eutrophication have appeared. These changes are visible in increased nutrient and mercury levels, slime forming on piers, and even blue-green algae blooms in the northern parts of the lake.
A forest drainage ditch running under Kempinniementie road into Hyvärlahti. The water is dark and fast-flowing. Water samples have been taken closer to Lake Ilmajärvi. Water protection measures completed in winter 2026 will reduce the load from this ditch.
At the same time, the lake remains deeply meaningful: a small village community has existed on its southern shore for centuries, and today many summer cottages line its shores.
In response to this development, Kirkas Ilmajärvi Association was founded in spring 2025 to protect and improve the condition of the lake.
We work in collaboration with local stakeholders, authorities, and experts to find concrete solutions — because protecting the lake requires shared responsibility.
Together, we can change the direction of this development and ensure that the lake remains healthy and vibrant for generations to come.
What We Do
Our work focuses on understanding the current state of the lake and taking action to improve it.
Monitoring water quality through visibility measurements and water sampling
Mapping and documenting the catchment area, including drainage flows from forests
Collaborating with authorities, environmental organizations, and landowners
Organizing meetings and discussions to bring stakeholders together
In 2025–2026, our activities have included:
Regular water clarity measurements across the lake
Field surveys of drainage areas and forest impacts
A water protection meeting with regional authorities, experts and organisations (Saimaan vesiensuojeluyhdistys & Imatra Region Environmental Services)
Collaboration with the largest forest owner in the area to implement water protection structures
These measures aim to reduce nutrient runoff and improve the long-term health of the lake.
In addition, we are involved in ongoing regional initiatives, such as the Sininen Haapavesi development project, which aims to strengthen water protection efforts and cooperation in the area.
